Philip Becnel published an excerpt of Principles of Investigative Documentation in Pursuit Magazine. The article, called “A Memo to the File,” relates an experience when a client rudely chastised one of our investigators because he did not like the content of a report she wrote. The attorney’s behavior spurred Philip to write a memo to the file (to himself), a process by which he both sought to protect the firm and weighed how to best respond to the situation. The book, overall, is about the best means to document investigations, and this chapter, the book’s conclusion, tells how the very process of writing something down and thinking about it makes one a more conscientious investigator.
