Jim McElhatton

Seeing firsthand how everyone here relentlessly pursues facts—and how creative they are doing it—it’s been clear from my first day that this isn’t just a job.

Jim McElhatton joined the Dinolt Becnel & Wells Investigative Group after more than fifteen years in journalism, including a decade as an investigative reporter in Washington, D.C. Dubbed “one of this town’s scrappiest, most resourceful reporters” by one taxpayer watchdog group, McElhatton has won more than a dozen journalism awards for feature writing and environmental and investigative reporting over the years. Prior to coming to Washington, he worked at daily newspapers in New Jersey and Texas.

His body of work has included extensive coverage of federal drug conspiracy cases, government procurement, ethics and campaign finance. He has a B.A. in communications from the College of New Jersey. He is a registered private investigator in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
